Robert Downey Jr. disagreed with Chris Hemsworth, who said he was "replaceable" as Thor. AdvertisementRobert Downey Jr. disagreed with Chris Hemsworth after the "Thor" star said he was "replaceable" in the "Avengers" movies. "Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all us Avengers. He's got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire, and gentleness," Downey Jr. continued, before describing Hemsworth's work in "Thor: Ragnarok," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame" as a "formidable hat trick." Downey Jr. and Chris Evans both left after "Endgame," and Scarlett Johansson exited following 2021's "Black Widow."

But the Hollywood strikes pushed the release date for "Deadpool & Wolverine, so "The Fall Guy" stepped in. 2012's "The Avengers" brought in $207 million opening weekend and grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. 'The Fall Guy' doesn't need to earn what past Marvel titles did to be successfulRyan Gosling in "The Fall Guy." There have to be other big winners, and that's where "The Fall Guy" comes in. "The Fall Guy" is tracking in the mid-$30 million range for this weekend, multiple industry sources told BI.

For many it felt like a soothing balm, underscoring the kind of communal experience people were missing as the still-new coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters. Even allowing for that, the operatic heights achieved by “Endgame,” which grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, would have been difficult to replicate. Such a concept would have sounded particularly foreign in the run-up to “Endgame,” when Marvel and its leader, Kevin Feige, appeared to possess a Midas touch. Venezuelan filmgoers watch the first screening in Venezuela of Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame" at a cinema in Caracas on April 26, 2019. That would mark a milestone for the company, which launched Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2019. It would be the first time Disney showed it can make money from Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. Disney will need to sustain and grow streaming profit to justify Iger's five-year-old strategy to go "all in" on the segment. Disney has already offered ESPN+, a sports streaming service that has some but not all of ESPN's content. Trian Partners' Nelson Peltz, who failed to join Disney's board Wednesday after securing just 31% of the vote, publicly questioned what he has called Disney's "woke" content strategy.

DisneyDisney has struggled to return to the lofty box office records of 2019 — and that may have helped open the door for its recent troubles with activist Nelson Peltz. Just four years ago, the studio had seven billion-dollar films, which contributed to a global box office haul of more than $13.2 billion. Sony produced and distributed "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which made $1.9 billion, although Disney's Marvel Studios did serve as a co-producer. "People go to watch a movie or a show to be entertained," Peltz said in recent interview with The Financial Times. Peltz has also taken particular issue with Disney's failed succession plans and what he's described as a disjointed streaming strategy.

CNN —In case you’ve somehow missed the biggest news in music this week, Beyoncé released her latest album on Friday, and “Act II: Cowboy Carter” goes out of its way to point out that music genres are overly confining labels. The 27-track compendium contains country music, to be sure, but also folk, gospel, rap, pop and even some Italian opera – and it celebrates Bey’s desire to span beyond any labels or limits. (She even spelled it out in a rare caption on her Instagram ahead of the album drop, writing that “Carter” “ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”) The resulting collection is musically rich, lyrically creative and distinctly Beyoncé. Throughout, Beyoncé acknowledges the influence of artists who have come before her, and subverts concepts of country music by connecting past to present.

New York CNN —“Madame Web” swung to No. In November, “The Marvels” saw a lackluster $47 million in domestic sales its opening weekend, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened in December to a feeble $27.6 million. It’s still too soon to estimate gross domestic sales for “Madame Web,” but, by the time it exited theaters, “Morbius” had made just $73 million. But “Madame Web,” which released February 14, struggled to gain upward momentum even along its six-day opening, which straddled two holidays: Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. CNN —A member of the crew working on the upcoming Marvel series “Wonder Man” died Tuesday following an accident on set, according to a statement from Marvel Studios. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident,” the studio said in a statement to CNN. The crew member, identified by the LA County Medical Examiner’s office as 41-year-old Juan Carlos Osorio of Temple City, California, was reportedly a rigger who fell from rafters. No foul play is suspected and the death investigation is ongoing, Miller said. “Wonder Man” was set to star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, an actor who had appeared in “Aquaman” and HBO’s “Watchmen.” Wonder Man is a lesser-known Marvel character first introduced in the ’60s.

I saw hundreds of new films with a variety of plots and styles made on every imaginable scale and budget. The movies have ostensibly been at death’s door at least since the shift to sync sound, which isn’t to undersell the industry’s business woes. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was “cursed,” read one headline; “‘Mission: Impossible 7’ falls short of expectations,” ran another. The moaning in the trades gave way to klaxon horns when much of SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14. This year also reminded us that a mass audience will happily get out of the house for movies without superheroes.
